Vicenzo Nibali: “Es un placer comenzar la temporada en Argentina”
Vincenzo Nibali is aware of the possibility that he might be able to add a second Vuelta a España to his portfolio after the “Froome case”. Nibali came in second in last year’s Spanish Tour, 2:15 behind the Brit. However, Vincenzo isn’t letting the matter distract him, and he is more focused than ever on the goals he has set for himself in 2018.
The outcome of the “Froome case” is not up to him, even in the event that the Sky team captain should not be able to prove his innocence and ultimately be disqualified, for Nibali there is nothing like the sense of satisfaction that comes from making it to the highest step on the podium. Another Vuelta would be a great triumph to add to the ones he already owns: the 2010 Vuelta a España, the Giro d’Italia in 2013 and 2016, and the 2014 Tour de France. There aren’t many riders in history who can boast such an impressive record.
Unaffected by the recent scandals battering the cycling world, Nibali is following his own path: he’s preparing for his 2018 debut. Like he has many times before, he will preview in Argentina, in the Vuelta a San Juan. “For me, starting the season in Argentina has become a tradition,” he explains. “It’s nice to start the season in Argentina; it’s a sort of good luck ritual that brings me positive results for the rest of the year. Furthermore, like we have in other years, we will be landing a few days before the Vuelta a San Juan to have a quick training camp far from the European cold.”
Even though the “Shark” already won the Tour de San Luis in 2010, for now he doesn’t want to hang any expectations on the Vuelta a San Juan. “It’s going to be hard to make it to a final triumph,” he admits. “It will be the first race of the year and I won’t be in top form, although I would like to win a stage. I almost did last year, with a long run. I’m going to try again,” he warns. No one doubts he will do so, because he always keeps his promises.
A good 2017
As we await a resolution of the Froome case, statistics say that Nibali scored four major victories in 2017: the Tour of Croatia, a stage in the Giro d’ Italia , in Bormio, another stage in the Vuelta a España, in Andorra la Vella and the Giro di Lombardia. Furthermore, he finished out the Italian Tour in third place, behind Dumoulin and Quintana, and came in second in the Spanish race, behind Froome. “I’m happy, because it isn’t easy to make it to the podium of two grand tours twice in one year; and winning the Giro di Lombardía wasn’t easy, either. It’s been a good year, and I hope that next year will be even better.”
Of course, his schedule will undergo some slight changes, because instead of the Giro, he will be betting everything on the Tour. “I am a major stage race rider, so of course I am going to go for them,” he says, without ruling out the Vuelta a España in addition to the ‘Grande Boucle’. “However, I’ll admit that I would also like to contend for the Spring Classics, especially the Lieges-Bastogne-Lieges, and in the season final World Championships, because there is a hard route that could suit my skills; it will be another goal for me.”
After Alberto Contador’s retirement, the ‘Shark’ is the only active rider who has won the “Triple Crown”: Jacques Anquetil, Felice Gimondi, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and the abovementioned Alberto Contador are the only other riders to have pulled off such a remarkable feat. “Without Alberto, cycling probably won’t be as much fun,” says Vincenzo, another aggressive, spectacular racer. “People really like riders like him because they never give up, and they always know how to impress. I think we’re all going to miss him; even us riders, because for many of us he continues to be a role model.”
In their first year in the maximum category of world cycling, team Bahrain-Merida obtained a total of 13 wins. The first one belonged to Navardauskas, right here in the Vuelta a San Juan time trial. In 2018, among other plans, they are planning to recuperate Ion Izagirre, who suffered a bad fall in the first stage of the Tour. The group led by Nibali will be reinforced by riders like Domenico Pozzovivo (Ag2r), who will lead the Giro, Matej Mohoric (UAE), Kristijan Koren (Cannondale) and Gorka Izagirre (Movistar).
“We’re going to be a more competitive team,” says the ‘Shark’ about Bahrain-Merida 2018. “Some experienced riders have joined us, Gorka and Domenico, and young riders with lots of talent, like Mohoric. We make a great group.” In the Vuelta a San Juan, between the 21st and the 28th of January, they hope to repeat last year’s feat and will be vying for their first triumph of the season.

Consciente de la posibilidad de que una segunda Vuelta a España engrose su palmarés tras el ‘caso Froome’ -fue segundo de la última ronda española, a 2:15 del británico-, Vincenzo Nibali intenta no distraerse y, más que nunca, se centra en los objetivos que se ha marcado para 2018.
La resolución del ‘caso Froome’ no depende de él e, incluso en el caso de que el líder del Sky no pudiera demostrar su inocencia y fuera finalmente descalificado, ya nadie le devolvería la satisfacción que se siente al subir al escalón más alto del podio. Eso sí, sumaría un gran triunfo más a los que ya tiene: Vuelta a España 2010, Giros de Italia 2013 y 2016 y Tour de Francia 2014. Pocos corredores en la historia del ciclismo pueden presumir de tener un palmarés tan selecto.
Ajeno a la polémica que envuelve otra vez al mundo del ciclismo, Nibali sigue a lo suyo: preparando su debut en 2018. Lo hará, como tantas otras veces, en Argentina, en la Vuelta a San Juan. “Debutar en Argentina se ha convertido, para mí, en una tradición”, explica. “Es un placer empezar la temporada en Argentina, es una especie de talismán que me da suerte el resto del año. Además, y al igual que otros años, nos trasladaremos unos días antes de la Vuelta a San Juan para hacer una pequeña concentración lejos del frío europeo”.
Aunque el ‘Tiburón’ ya ganó el Tour de San Luis 2010, por el momento no quiere marcarse objetivos para la Vuelta a San Juan. “Será difícil aspirar al triunfo final”, se sincera. “Será la primera carrera del año y la forma no será óptima, aunque me gustaría ganar una etapa. El año pasado estuve a punto de lograrlo con una fuga desde lejos. Volveré a intentarlo”, avisa. Y nadie duda de que será así, porque nunca falla a su palabra.
Un buen 2017
A la espera de lo que suceda con Froome, las estadísticas dicen que Nibali logró cuatro victorias en 2017: el Tour de Croacia, una etapa del Giro de Italia –Bormio-, otra de la Vuelta a España –Andorra la Vella- y el Giro de Lombardía. Además, acabó tercero la ronda italiana –tras Dumoulin y Quintana- y segundo la española –tras Froome-. “Estoy contento, porque no es fácil subir al podio de dos grandes vueltas un mismo año y tampoco es fácil ganar el Giro de Lombardía. Ha sido un buen año, aunque confío en que el próximo sea aún mejor”.
Su programa, sin embargo, va a sufrir ligeras modificaciones porque, en vez del Giro, lo fiará todo al Tour. “Soy un corredor de grandes vueltas por etapas y, por tanto, lucharé por ellas”, dice sin descartar la Vuelta a España además de la ‘Grande Boucle’. “Pero reconozco que también me gustaría luchar por las clásicas de primavera, especialmente la Lieja-Bastogne-Lieja, y al final de temporada por el Campeonato del Mundo, porque tiene un recorrido duro, que se puede adaptar a mis características, y será otro objetivo para mí”.
Tras la retirada de Alberto Contador, el ‘Tiburón’ es el único corredor en activo que ha ganado la ‘Triple Corona’: Jacques Anquetil, Felice Gimondi, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault y el citado Alberto Contador son los únicos que lo han logrado antes. “Sin Alberto, el ciclismo será probablemente menos divertido”, dice Vincenzo, otro corredor ofensivo y espectacular. “Corredores como él gustan mucho a la gente porque no se rinden jamás y siempre son capaces de sorprender. Creo que nos va a faltar a todos; también a nosotros, los corredores, porque para muchos sigue siendo un ejemplo”.

“Seremos un equipo más competitivo”, comenta el ‘Tiburón’ sobre el Bahrain-Merida 2018. “Han llegado corredores expertos, como Gorka y Domenico, y jóvenes con mucho talento como Mohoric. Formamos un gran grupo”. En la Vuelta a San Juan, entre los días 21 a 28 de enero, buscarán al igual que el año pasado el primer triunfo de la temporada.
